Can you guess these instruments by their sound?
Do you think you can tell instruments apart from each other? What if you can only listen to the timbre? It turns out to be harder than you think. Test yourself in this video!

Careful Listening is More Important than Making Sounds Happen - the Lucier Effect

    8:51 I'm a psych student obsessed with music and i've found that for me it's impossible to sing microtonally or "out of tune". I think our brains subconsciously remembers the characteristics of music that is the reason it sound good. So even without perfect pitch it's able to replicate the frequencies of notes perfectly because that's what sounds good to it, or more professionally what music is natural to our brain. I've also noticed it's easier to create melodies vocally than on instruments. I think this effect should be studied more considering how our brains and music are link, like how speech follows rhythmic patterns (PB&J sounds natural buy J&PB doesn't) that sound natural to our brains but melodically.

    The delayed speech trick is something encounter frequently using radios to communicate at work. When your voice comes out of someone else's radio Close by so you can hear what you're saying well, half a second later, it becomes almost impossible to talk coherently! 15 years doing it, and I still struggle with it!

    I think maybe the headphone pitch shift effect just happens because when you take your headphones off, the doppler effect happens as you move them away from your head, and then when you stop your brain doesn't notice the pitch going back up again since the sound is quieter than when you first started pulling them off your head

      @@hapyharyhard0n581 yeah if they aren't hard panned in the earbuds there must be something getting in the way of the real audio and your ears, whether it's RUclips or the phone OS or the earbuds software. Not sure exactly what you're describing, but it is the case that our ears and perception adjust for the loudness around us; perhaps in a silent room when your ears "turn up the volume" they go a little too far for your comfort?

    I have trouble with the Risset beat and Shepard tone illusion. I can _always_ hear when they "start over" no matter how good they are. Usually it sounds like a certain number of music measures (say, 4 or 8) that simply repeat over and over. I have no idea why that is. Perhaps my brain is telling me, "This isn't actually possible," and searches for the other tone/beat that slides in. I am also borderline for Asperger's and maybe that has something to do with it.

    Pretty sure the Lucier effect also has to do with the speaker quality and characteristics. To do it perfectly you'll need something that can record and play back sounds in such a way that in a room with no characteristics, the live audio and the recorded audio will sound exactly the same

  • @juleskireeff4563
    @juleskireeff4563 3 месяца назад

    Well, I didn't know that. This is the same trick as the Shepard tone. When the sound is "raising" (while it's not really raising), the lower frequences (the low octave) are silent at the begining of the loop and get louder in louder as it "raises" and re-goes silent when the loop restarts. For the accute frequences, it's the exact opposite. And for the middle octave, nothing changes (same loudness in the loop). All the octaves raising in term of note and all going back to their initial point at the end of the loop, it gives us that impression of infinite raising. But I never thought about doing it with the tempo of a music.
